Match Report: DWPC Ladies v Aberdeen – League Play off semi – final
Thursday 28th March 2024 –
Very well done to DWPC Ladies who have qualified for the Scottish League Play off final with a commanding 26 – 10 victory against Aberdeen at Carnegie Centre last night.
The home team fielded 12 players and welcomed back GB Internationalist Niamh Moloney. Nice too to introduce U/17 players Millie Wishart and Erin Livie for their first start with the senior team.
A strong hybrid defence designed to pressurise the Aberdeen players who scored significantly in the last meeting between the two teams paid dividends as DWPC raced into a 7-2, 1st period lead. This was consolidated in period 2 & 3 as we rotated our players with two 5-2 period returns for a 17-6 three quarter scoreline. As Aberdeen tired we utilised our counter attack well with a 9-4, 4th period score for a 26-10 full time scoreline.
This was a strong performance in which the team was always leading, winning all 4 periods of play which meant all our squad enjoyed time in the water. It was very positive that our goals were shared across 9 different players, including a debut goal for Erin.
Our organised attack was controlled and we worked hard to create 9 extra man situations and gain 2 penalties although our 3 from 10 goal return in man-up is something we need to work on. We did concede 9 exclusions but our man-down defence was excellent saving 8 of the 9 these situations and actually scoring one goal ourselves on the counter.
On the negative side, at times our distribution and passing accuracy was awry leading to some missed goal scoring opportunities. All in all a good win, but certainly things to work on in upcoming training sessions to prepare for the challenge of Kirkintilloch in the final.
Match summary:
- Goals: Zara, Catlin McR (4), Nicola (9), Erin (1), Amelia, Kayleigh (3), Niamh (3), Lucy (1), Robyn (1), Alison (3), Caitlin O’M (1), Millie.
- Exclusions: Zara, Catlin McR (1), Nicola (2), Erin (1), Amelia, Kayleigh (2), Niamh , Lucy, Robyn (1), Alison (1), Caitlin O’M (1), Millie.
- Man-up: 3 scored from 9 attempts – Penalties: 2 from 2 scored
- Man-down: 8/9 saved including 1 counter-attack goal.
Match Report – U/17 Girls Scottish League– DWPC/M’Hill v Kirkintilloch & Kilsyth
Thursday 28th January 2024 – Carnegie Centre, Dunfermline.
Very well done to the combined DWPC/ M’Hill U/17 Girls team on their 21-13 victory over Kirkintilloch and Kilsyth last night at the Carnegie Centre.
We had a strong squad of 12 players on poolside and all girls enjoyed water time. The Kirkintilloch team fielded just 9 players and it was clear that 4 of their players were young and inexperienced which we managed to take advantage of, especially in the first 3 quarters.
Marking their stronger players closely and double marking the centre forward limited KK’s early attacking threat allowing us to force possession turnovers and then counter attack leading to a 7-2 first period lead. Eve also had an excellent penalty save. To their credit, KK adjusted their attack in the 2nd period reducing their turnovers resulting in a 4-3 scoreline and an 11-5 half-time lead. Our defence and goalkeeping was excellent in the 3rd period conceding only 2 goals and scoring 8 in reply with strong drives into space against their less experienced players. Our level of play and concentration dropped a little in the 4th period as KK commendably changed their defensive set up to mark between our attackers to help cover their younger team-mates and then countered strongly winning the period 6-2 for a final score of 21-13.
Positives of the Performance:
- Our organised defensive shape and application was very good. We saved 5 from the 5 man-ups conceded.
- We created many goal shooting opportunities scoring 21 goals.
Areas to work on:
- Always position your body when attacking so that you can see the ball and are ready to catch, shoot or pass or protect it.
- Only pass to a player who is looking at you. If swimming away from the ball, roll onto your back early.
- If you have the ball and in free space, move forward vertically towards the goal to shoot or draw a defender and pass to an unmarked team-mate. If swimming into goal with the ball pick it up early to prevent opposition steals. Bring the ball into your hip away from the defender and lift the ball from underneath.
- If your opponent blocks your initial drive, keep driving hard to get inside water to try and score or force an exclusion.
- Try to defend the ball carrier without fouling for longer

Match Report –U19 Girls -SNL – KKASC (KK) v DWPC – 27/03/23
Match Report – U/19 Girls Scottish League– Kirkintilloch & Kilsyth v DWPC (M’Hill)
Wed 27th March 2024 – Strathclyde University – Glasgow
Despite working very hard and competing positively throughout the game, our depleted and inexperienced U/19 girls team lost their 3rd away game of the season last night, 20-9 to Kirkintilloch & Kilsyth.
The first 2 periods started with Zara in goal and utilising a hybrid drop/press defence to try and negate their physically faster and stronger players we made many successful saves/blocks/steals and interceptions, however despite creating several chances we found it difficult to pose a consistent attacking threat under pressure resulting in missed shots and possession turnovers.
Per 1 – 6- 2, Per 2 – 4 - 2 – Half time score: KK – 10 - DWPC – 4
Eve was introduced into the goal at the start of the 3rd period allowing Zara to play outfield. This added more experience, attacking threat and defensive stability. Eve also had some excellent saves which resulted in a 3-4 period scoreline and a 14 - 7 deficit at the three quarter stage. Despite losing the last period 2-6 it was encouraging as we introduced our younger less experienced players that we still maintained a high and determined work rate and indeed made several chances that we unfortunately missed.
Final Score:– KK – 20 - DWPC 9
Positives of the Performance:
- We competed very well against an older, bigger, faster and more experienced opposition. We swam hard to cover their counter attacks on many occasions.
- We offered much less inside water to their drivers than last game.
- We created several good chances.
- All players enjoyed some water time.
- Our organised defensive shape was good. We saved 5 from the 6 man-ups conceded
Areas to work on:
- Our man-up success was 0 from 3. Try to pass the ball quickly to move the defence and create a scoring opportunity rather than holding onto the ball and then shooting when the defence is set.
- Try to offer more offensive drives from the perimeter.
- Adjust body position quickly when preparing to shoot. Take responsibility to move forward to the goal if you are unmarked.
- Try to mark the ball carrier without fouling for longer.
Match Statistics:
Goal scorers: Lucy McN (6), Erin L (1), Amelia P (1), Lottie A (1)
Exclusions: Millie W (1 +2 pens), Erin (2), Lucy (2), Zara (1)
Other players: Eve F, Ava T, Ruby O, Ruby R, Libby F
Man-up: 3 gained – 0 Converted. Penalties: 2 gained, both scored
Man-down: 6 conceded – 5 saved. Penalties: 2 conceded, both scored
U17 Boys in SNL action on 27 Mar
Boys U17 SNL
Warrender 8-15 Menzieshill / DWPC
A youthful team travelled to Edinburgh with only one 2008 in the squad. This didn't stop them from taking control of the game right from the off, with an excellent defensive effort and measured attacks. The boys took their chances well and raced into a 5-1 first qtr lead.
In the second qtr Warrender stepped up their game but the boys kept their discipline and managed to convert two man-up opportunities, half time came with a 7-4 lead.
Recognising Warrenders fight back the boys came out fighting in the 3rd quarter and managed to keep a clean sheet whilst coming up with four counter attack goals, to take an 11-4 lead into the final quarter.
A change in goalies and some positional changes saw a fast and entertaining finish to the game and the end of the U17 SNL season. Taking the win home 15-8.
