Extra man situations:
Gained:             2                                  Conceded:        2 + 1 pen

Success:            0%                                    Success:         50% on man down

Reflection: This ultimately was a disappointing performance after a very competitive start where the team in searching for goals found it difficult to adjust to the 30 second possession clock and 30 metre pitch. Finding it difficult to penetrate at the offensive end we lost concentration, often shooting and driving at the wrong time allowing Rotherham and particularly their England internationals Adam Schofield and Richard Leighton, who scored 10 between them, the opportunity for counter attack goals.

Game 2:   Lancaster 18 Dunfermline 6
Per 1:    6   0
Per2:   5   2          (11– 2)
 Per 3:   5   2          (16 – 4)

Extra man situations:
Gained:            8 + 1 pen                                 Conceded:        5
Scored:            1+ pen                                     Goals lost:        4
Success:           12.5%                                          Success:        20%%

Reflection: Despite the heavy scoreline this was a much more competitive performance against the current British champions. To work hard enough to gain 8 exclusions and a penalty and to draw the final period, against an admittedly slightly weaker squad, was a commendable effort. That we managed to score only 1 of our extra man situations indicates the technical, physical and tactical improvement still required to compete at this level.

Game 3:  Dunfermline 6 Manchester 14
Per 1:    3   3
Per2:   1   3          (4– 6)
 Per 3:   0   4          (4 – 9)
 Per 4:   2   4          (6 – 14)

Goal Scorers: Neil Strachan (2), Ryan Laird, Mark Speed, Callum Fraser(2)
Exclusions: Allan Shepherd, Dave Stewart(2), Neil Strachan(2), Steven Adams, Mark Speed(2)
Extra man situations:
Gained:            5                                              Conceded:        8 + 1 pen
Scored:            1                                               Goals lost:        3 + 1 pen
Success:           20%                                               Success:        38 %

Reflection: Despite an excellent workrate this perhaps was the most disappointing result of the weekend as I think we could have done better. We made an excellent start but missing an extra man situation then losing a goal with a second to go in the period meant we were drawing 3-3 instead of being 4-2 up at the end of the first period. We then lost momentum, perhaps as fatigue became a factor, losing the next part of the game 11-3. Often we had a chance at one end but an inability to score under heavy pressure put pressure on our defence which for the first time in the weekend were conceding extra man situations.

Weekend reflection: There is no doubt that this was a tough weekend and results show that this was three heavy defeats. That being said this was an excellent learning process playing against 3 of the top teams in Britain and also coming to terms with referee interpretation at this level. There is no doubt that we need collectively and individually to raise our performance, technically, physically and tactically (including the coach) but it should be remembered that this is a predominantly young side with only 4 of the13 over 30 and 8 of the 13 in their teens or early 20’s. This was a big step up from our division 3 national league games, but hopefully the opportunity to play in the full 30m by 20m pitch against such strong teams will benefit our ASA cup effort in April and thereafter our division 2 campaign in September.
