02 May 08 ASA Cup press report

Dunfermline's 15 & under team won the British Academy Cup defeating Manchester 13-12 in the final which was held at the Manchester Aquatics centre, becoming the first Scottish team to win the trophy. The win followed four years of planning where our team have played in previous campaigns underage to gain valuable experience.

Having defeated Sutton & Cheam 15-2 earlier in the semi-final with an commanding performance Dunfermline went into the final expecting a very difficult match which it exactly what it proved to be.

Scorers in the semi-final : Christopher Campbell 7, Darren Campbell 3, Jordan Wood, Zach Thomson 2 each & Logan Shepherd 1

The final started well for Dunfermline as they won the first quarter 6-4 with 4 goals from Darren Campbell on the counter attack and a goal each from Zach Thomson & Christopher Campbell.

The excellent play continued into the second quarter with a further 2 goals from Darren Campbell and again a goal each from Zach Thomson & Christopher Campbell as Dunfermline won the quarter 3-2 to take a 9-6 lead into the
second half. Unfortunately forward Jordan Wood suffered cramp late in this quarter which limited Dunfermline's attacking options for the remainder of the match.

The third quarter was tied at 3-3 with one goal each from Darren Campbell, Christopher Campbell and Zach Thomson as the match slowed down from the early high tempo and the tension mounted.

Starting the final quarter 12-9 ahead and with Jordan Wood, having partly recovered, returning to play in a defensive role, the Dunfermline team ran down the clock well using their possession time to the maximum. Chances were missed by both sides and Manchester edged back into the game to close to 12-11 before Christopher Campbell scored what turned-out to be the winner with a counter attacking goal. Manchester struck back to take the match into the final minute only one goal behind. A Dunfermline player was excluded for 20 seconds with only 30 seconds to go which presented Manchester with a chance to equalise however Dunfermline's 'man down' defence stood firm
pressurising Manchester's player to hit the post, a decisive time-out was immediately called as Dunfermline recovered possession which allowed Captain Zach Thomson to run down the clock when the match was restarted and
Dunfermline were the Champions.

Goalkeeper Jake Hinley returned to form in both games making many good saves and providing accurate long passes to support the counter attacking style of play which Dunfermline adopted to utilise the speed of Darren & Christopher Campbell. Captain Zach Thomson marshalled the defence well against some good Manchester forwards and all the Dunfermline players worked extremely hard to limit the chances which Manchester had to a minimum.

Dunfermline Coach Brian Campbell praised his young team and paid tribute to the hard work put in by the players over the past four years to reach their current high standard. Winning a British competition given the superior
set-up in England is a major achievement for a Scottish Club and this team now join the Club's Senior team who won the British Senior Cup in 1992 & 1993.

Coach Campbell also paid tribute to all those who have supported the Club's various junior development initiatives over the previous six years including the local Sports Council and the Carnegie Trust, he is certain that without
such assistance the players would not have reached their current high standards.

Scorers in the final : Darren Campbell 6, Christopher Campbell 4 & Zach Thomson 3.

With InCAS having recently started-up a water polo team and the current proposals to provide an all deep pool at the Carnegie Centre the future for local water polo is looking healthy. The Club hope that other swimmers / clubs will introduce water polo to both provide an alternative activity for their young swimmers, and also to act as a retention tool for the high percentage of members who normally 'retire' at around 13-15 years of age.

23 Feb 08 Womens Olympic Qualifying

2004 silver medallist Greece has taken the last of only eight Olympic berths. Head coach Kyrakios Iosfidios´ beat Canada in the second cross-over game of the Women´s FINA Olympic Games Qualification Tournament in Imperia, Italy in low-scoring game 5-2 (1-0, 2-0, 0-1, 2-1), when three goals by Kyriaki Liosi of ANC Glyfada made the final difference between both teams in a real battle of attrition. Two-time Olympic Games participant Canada missed for the first time in history a major event in women´s waterpolo.

Greece are joining the three other semi-finalists Russia, Hungary and Italy, playing Russia in tomorrow´s semi-final games again. The Netherlands, USA, Australia and the hosting nation China have already earned the four other Olympic berths as representatives of their respective continents.

GB Junior Squad

=============

Following a selection weekend in Wales, congratulations go to Andrew Woodall in making the final squad for the GB Junior squad which will be competing in the European Qualifiers and hopefully finals over the next two years. Andrew is joined by Lewis Don of Menzieshill.

Training Match

============

Lancaster brought a strong 1993+ squad to visit the Club on Sunday 17 February and take part in a 3 hour training match where we played sixteen quarters in total.

The agreed format saw alternating two quarters of the strongest boys teams followed by two quarters with the girls augmented by some boys players. Matches were very competitive and have helped each Club prepare for the forthcoming ASA Cup campaign, the draw for which is anticipated to be issued soon.

Our thanks go to Lancaster for their attendance, to all the players for their superb effort throughout the session and to those who helped out with the refereeing, on the table and with the post match hospitality.

14 Feb 08 ED Development League

Dunfermline defeated Warrender in the first match of the East District Development League on Tuesday night.  Dunfermline raced into a 9-2 lead by the end of the first period.  Warrender came back strongly in the 2nd quarter with the majority of the Dunfermline team made up of younger less experienced players.  At half time Dunfermline had lost the 7 goal advantage and were leading by 12-11.  The third period could of been decisive with Warrender taking the lead for the first time during the match until Dunfermline put in the older players to try and rescue the match.  With Dunfermline trailing going into the final quarter they started with the first 7 and they managed to rescue the game and the victory winning the final quarter 9-3 to win the match 26-21.

This match was closer than the score suggests with Warrender coming back strongly in the 2nd quarter, shooting into stand in goalkeeper Alexander Crawford who was playing his first game in goals.  A strong period in the 4th quarter rescued the result.

Team: A Crawford, Z Thomson, A Johnstone, C Wilkinson, A Melville, J Thomson, L Thomson, J Wood, H Hewitt, J Pulham, C Ironside, L Rodger, J Cormack

Scorers: J Wood 8, A Johnstone 5, Z Thomson 3, A Melville 3, J Thomson 2, L Thomson 2, H Hewitt 2, A Crawford 1

Message from Julia MacKay:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, ie the lack of interest from players and families the 25th anniversary dinner has to be cancelled. This is a great disappointment, as this was going to be a celebration of the clubs success.

22 Jan 08 Message from Secretary

In the second warm-up match InCAS recorded their second win over DWPC winning 7-6 in another closely fought match. Behind 5-3 starting the final quarter DWPC closed the gap and just failed to catch InCAS missing a chance
with five seconds to go. All players are to be congratulated for the effort they again put into the match and an improvement was noted from last week's match.

Jack Donaldson returned to refereeing after many years away and, after having received a rules update before the game, had a very good match accompanied by Paul Metcalfe. The timing system was again operational and thanks go to all who manned it - the players really benefit when the clocks are on.

The final match in this warm-up series is next week and with the fixtures for the Development league due for publication shortly, the next few months promise to be a busy time for our young players.

Team Caledonia have received designs from Turbo for both the men’s and ladies teams (trunks, costumes, towels, caps, bathrobes, T Shirts).  They are available to see on the Warrender website.  It would be good to get all Caley players feedback on the designs so we can decide what to order.

In the first of three warm-up matches for the ED Development League InCAS defeated DWPC 12-9 in an excellent match.

For many of our younger players (and new coaches as well) this was their first 'real' match and all performed very well. Special mention to new boy from InCAS Donald (Pingu) Griffiths who played in the shallow end goals and saved a penalty !

New volunteers also stepped forward to man the table which does make such a difference for the players.

The second match will be played next Tuesday evening at 9pm and Parents / friends are invited to come along and support the youngsters and/or help-out on the table (no experience needed!).

Helping out with the refereeing next week will be life member Jack Donaldson (Big Al's Dad) as he returns to the pool-side after an absence of many many years.

Menzieshill have confirmed that they will be entering the league which is excellent news for the youngsters who now face many exiting matches over the months ahead as each team will play each other home and away twice.

Bagpacking at Marks and Spencers

Message from Zach:

I have finalised the rota for tomorrows bag packing. all those with polo club t-shirts are asked to wear them and if possible are asked if they could leave their top once they have completed their slot as it looks better if everyone is wearing club kit. however on a lighter note all those who wish to wear a Santa hat or reindeer antlers may also do so. please arrive promptly and on time and remember to sign in at the hamper counter for safety reasons. hope to see you all there, thanks.

Christmas Night out

Message from Stewart

All,

I think we discussed getting a wee get together between Christmas and New Year to celebrate the year's successes. We toyed with the idea of a Christmas meal, but felt this would happen generically (see below), and decided instead to meet for a night out in "the Toon" on 28 December. All members of Caley and Dunfy are welcome, and I have it on good authority that everyone will be put up, if desired.

The proposal is that we meet at the Seven Kings between 8 and 8.30. If you don't know how to get there, get a map (http://www.multimap.com/maps/?hloc=GB|KY12 8DA#t=l&map=56.07136,-3.46463|15|4&loc=GB:56.07136:-3.46463:15|KY12 8DA|KY12 8DA ) and don't use sat-nav!

I have it on good authority from Calum, that the team Christmas meal will happen immediately after this at 2am on 29th December in Pizza Boy or Aldos, whichever has a smaller queue.

Let me know if you're interested so that we don't leave anyone behind

Cheers,

Stewart

BAG PACKING
===========
This takes place on Sunday 23rd December at Marks & Spencer. As many members and parents to look after the youngsters are required to maximise our efforts. Contact Iain Thomson if you can help on the day.

RESTART
=======
The Club restarts on Sunday 6 January 2008 at 5.30pm.

DISTRICT DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE
===========================
In the new East District Development League we shall have members playing for the Club and for InCAS, who are forming a Water polo team for the first time with our assistance. Warrender and Menzieshill will also be playing in the league which will run from February until June and offer real competition for our large squad of young players.

Squad lists (InCAS members have still to be added) are attached along with the home dates. It is likely that our younger players may only participate in DWPC vs InCAS matches where we can control the relevant standards of players during the match to ensure that there is no mismatch. Team Coaches will select the players for each match and a full schedule will be issued when dates from Warrender & Menzieshill have been obtained.

Having Swimming and Water polo Clubs working together does not happen very often in Scottish Swimming and we thank InCAS for their help in increasing the competitive environment.

Training on Tuesday match nights will proceed as normal with the match commencing at 9pm - members and parents are encouraged to come along and support the teams and create a good environment for the kids to perform in. Table Officials will also be required to assist (it is not difficult) and volunteers should give their names to any of the Managers or Jeanette Metcalfe - if we want the kids to learn how to use the timing equipment to best effect we need operators for it !!!

News from Secretary

EAST DISTRICT LEAGUE (2008) -
===========================
A Junior East District league (1993+) will be run during 2008 which we will enter two teams with Warrender also entering a joint team with Portobello. Our home matches will take place on a Tuesday evening at 9pm (after training!) with each team playing each other twice initially. Squad lists and some fixtures will be announced shortly (no transfers will be allowed) and it is planned that all the girls will play in the same squad to encourage their development into a team.

To allow this to take place a Manager and Coach is required for each of the teams, I shall not be coaching any of these development teams to allow others to step forward although I will be lending assistance as required - anyone interested should contact me - if no-one steps forward unfortunately we shall likely be unable to compete which would represent a missed opportunity for all our young players !

It will mainly be a development league giving all players the opportunity to play (everyone playing part of each match will also be one of the rules), over age players will also be allowed dependent on their standard and over age goalkeepers will also be allowed although restricted to half pond passing.

With few opportunities in the Scottish system for young players to play against each other this East District initiative is one which the Club are happy to support and encourage.

MEMBERSHIP FEES 2008 -
=====================
Reminder that these are now due and can be paid to the treasurer.

CLUB VACANCIES -
==============
Good news on the Committee vacancy front with Iain Thomson confirming his intention to continue as overall Junior Team Manager and Robert Tate volunteering to take on the Press & Publicity role. These are both subject to approval at the next Committee meeting. With Chris Woodall also taking on the fund-raising post from 1 January 2008 this gives the Club the opportunity to start moving forward.

Volunteers for the positions of Club President, Coach and Captain are still awaited - come on down and take on the post !!!!

COMMITTE MEETING -
================
The next meeting of the Committee will be at my house on Wednesday 12 December 2007 commencing at 7.30pm

RETIRING SWIMMERS -
=================
At this time of year many young swimmers (11+) take the decision to retire, if you know of anyone considering this why not encourage then to come along and try Water polo.

Bagpacking News

Firstly I would like to thank all of those who helped out at the bag packing, M&S on Saturday. It was a great success for the club with a total of £840.74 raised and thanks is also due to M&S for their support of the club and also their customers for their donations.

After this great success we have been offered another bag packing day on Sunday 23rd December (which is thought will be an extremely busy day as it is so close to xmas). So again I am looking for volunteers to help. I know that we have only just finished with one day but this is an opportunity we can’t miss! However this time I will need a lot more volunteers (YES THAT MEANS SENIORS TOO) due to how busy the shop is expected to be. Any one who could help with the day should let me know on 01383 727397 or email iainandlornathomson@tiscali.co.uk

Once again thank you to all those who volunteered before… I hope to see you and more next time. Thank you.  Remember if we don’t fundraise then the fees WILL go up.

Secretaries Messages from AGM

Please find attached the Minutes of the recent AGM. Should you have any
corrections and / or amendments to these Minutes please reply by return,
your comments will be retained for next year's AGM.

As you will note a number of positions remain vacant which, unless we
receive volunteers to fill the positions, will have a direct negative effect
on the progress of the Club next year as these positions are unlikely to be
covered by the other committee members.

You will also note that our Treasurer, Roddy Mackay, will be stepping down
next year. Without a Treasurer the Club cannot function and pool bookings
would have to be cancelled, to avoid this it would be preferable to identify
a new Treasurer as early as possible, if anyone is interested please advise
Roddy Mackay.

The lack of a President and Club Captain also seriously hampers our
development as both these Club officials should be working towards pulling
the various ideas and plans together in addition to identifying new talent
to manage the Club and encourage members.

With Alan Donaldson also stepping down as Club Coach from Easter 2008
coaching cover will be required for all Senior sessions, senior players
should consider how to manage this situation from Easter 2008.

Please step forward if you are interested in filling any of the vacant
positions.

The AGM of the East District takes place at Boroughmuir Rugby Club on
Thursday 6 December 2007 at 7pm.

Three delegates from the Club are allowed to attend and volunteers are
requested, at present we have o-one attending.

A copy of the AGM information is available from the Secretary on request.

Club Anniversary Celebration

It is proposed to hold a 25yr anniversary event possibly on the evening of
19 January 2008. Although Julia Mackay has volunteered to organise the event
she cannot do this alone and additional volunteers are required to assist
her, she would also appreciate any suggestions on format etc. please reply
to the secretary who will pass them onto Julia or speak to her at a Senior
session.
