GB found Australia too strong and went down 5-18 in the Final of the Youth Tournament
30 Dec 06 GB reach Final of Pan Pacific Waterpolo Cup
GB and New Zealand tied again in normal time in the semi-final. Extra time failed to separate the teams and it went to a shoot-out in which GB prevailed. In all the excitement there was a red card for the GB Assistant Coach. Australia, easily the strongest team, now await in the final.
28 Dec 06 Pan Pacific Waterpolo Cup
The event has started in Calgary. GB Youth team play today with games against New Zealand and Australia. Programme (local time is GMT -7 hours) and results
29 Dec 06 Pan Pacific Waterpolo Cup
GB took part in the first tied game of the Tournament with a 9-9 draw vs New Zealand. Ali Campbell scored 2 goals in the 3rd period as GB pulled back from 1-5 deficit in the 2nd. GB won the 4th quarter as well.
Their second game was more one-sided and they lost to Australia 5-15.
GB's came back from 3 goals down to tie with USA 8-8 in their first match of Day #3. Ali Campbell scored one goal.
Canada were GB's opponents in their last round robin game and this too ended in a draw - 10-10. This should put GB in 3rd place on goal difference, behind Australia and New Zealand with a game against NZ next.
23 Dec 06 ASA Championships 2007
At the December Technical Meeting it was agreed that 2007 ASA Club Championships would operate on a home or away basis, with National League
First Division Clubs being excluded from the first round. The first round would be played on a "regional" basis, i.e. with the country cut into quarters and teams playing each other in the quarter, i.e. South, West and Wales, North and Scotland, etc. The semis and finals will be played at Manchester on June 30th/July 1st, 2007. The Age Groups will be Senior Men & Women, Junior Men and Women (1989/1990); Youth Men & Women (1991+) (next year we will be looking to introduce Academy Age Group (1993/1994)) The dates for the Home or Aways will be dependent on entries. Ideally we will be looking for the matches to be played in pools deeper than 1.2 metres shallow, ideally the deeper the better. We are awaiting a decision by the ASA about age groups, i.e. that a junior player can play for a different senior team. The water polo conditions say that its ok, whilst the ASA's general conditions contradict this, so we are awaiting clarification. Mike Coles, ASA Domestic co-ordinator
Entry forms are not now due to be received until early in the New Year. As you will note there are eligibility issues to be clarified, dates to be advised & decisions to  be taken on where we play our home matches. Carnegie Centre is 1.2m deep at the shallow end therefore remains a possibility. BM Campbell, Club Secretary
23 Dec 06 National Women's Water Polo League - Junior
"Just got this note re Junior Women's League. I'm not sure if we will have enough female players to enter a team. Can you let me know if you think otherwise. If not we could try and get our players into other teams." Ken Fussell
"We have the go ahead from the ASA Water polo committee to run a Youth 91/92 & Junior 89/90 national league pilot, we will discuss at AGM to get it formally set up. We need 4 teams in each age group, as far as I know at this point in time juniors and younger can play for different clubs than the ones they have in the senior league. I will get this clarified. Proposed dates are 2 weekends out of these 4 to play both leagues together, 2 89's games followed by 2 91's games - 12 games a weekend as we do for Divs 2 & 3. 3/4th Feb : 3/4th March : 17/18th March : 31st/1st April (juniors are at Millfield next day). I need to know fairly sharpish who wants to enter a team so I can get some pools booked. All costs will be shared by competing clubs. Please let me know a.s.a.p. if you are interested and in one or both age groups." Judith Clayton

19 Dec 06 Diary Dates 2007
"We are starting to organise polo for the first part of 2007. The 2007 Scottish National League is to be played in the first 4 – 5 months in 2007. We need to know of any dates that are not suitable for the teams to play. The SNL should run all comps as 2 rounds of central location deep water events with a finals day for all comps probably at Tollcross.
As you will know bookings at the Stirling pool have been done a year ago so we need to use these dates as we have to pay for them regardless.
Dates currently booked :- Sat 27th Jan 6 hours; Sun 28th Jan 6 hour; Sun 11th Feb 6 hours; Sat 17th Feb 6 hours; Sat 24th Feb 6 hours; Sun 25th Feb 6 hours; Sat 28th Apr 6 hours; Sun 29th Apr 6 hours
Possible bookings:- Sat 10th Mar 4 hours; Sun 11th Mar 6 hours
We will need to decide which times will be used for RTC, Women’s training and SNL.
Could you all please let me know if any of the above days conflict with other events, water polo or otherwise.
Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Great New Year." Ken Fussell, SASA Domestic Co-ordinator

20 Dec 06 Fun Night
The Fun Night was a great success with a great turnout. The youngsters (and a couple of "oldsters") played a hectic game with about 20 a side. Afterwards the "juniors"  took on the "dads", a couple of seniors and a "veteran" in an end-to-end struggle which eventually resulted in victory for the dads! The Christmas Raffle was drawn and winners will be published soon.
19 Dec 06 FUN NIGHT TONIGHT
Club closes for winter break tonight. The session will be a fun night which is open to all including parents. The challenge is out and the kids expect to win easily!
17 Dec 06 Surprise for Dougie
Dougie Campbell was taken by surprise when he was called through from a leisure swim with his children in the main pool to find a large number of old and current team mates waiting to start a tournament in his honour in the training pool. His former and present clubs, Portobello, Dunfermline and Lancaster were  joined by a Select featuring many old club (photo) and international colleagues (photos) in an event to say farewell to Dougie and his family who are off to Australia in the New Year. David Stewart the organiser was delighted with the tournament which was played in great spirit. Dougie took part  (photo) for one team or another in all 13 games. At one stage we had the rare sight of the 4 Campbell brothers back in action together. The final matched Lancaster and Portobello who played out a draw then scored 5 each in the penalty shoot-out then, fittingly, Dougie scored the decisive penalty to give Lancaster the trophy. In the evening David Stewart, Ally McKilligan and Dougie's wife Kay had arranged another surprise with a get-together in Charlestown and this too was a great success with many old friends meeting up after many years. Presentations (photo) were made.  (more later)

relevant entry forms and details issued next week to Clubs. The Club hope to enter the Senior, Youth and possibly Junior competitions to provide a test for our players.
04 Dec 06 Thanks Jim

I hope you have a successful season in Div 3 and that when you do come back into Div 2 you have a stronger team and bit a bit more luck."

02 Dec 06 Veterans Tournament
A new generation of players has taken over the annual triangular tournament for the Charlie Grierson Trophy. Home team Warrender managed to shake off the non-availability of Jack Donaldson as Derek Docherty, Ross and Ian MacCallum led the charge to see off the challenges of Galashiels and Portobello. Ian Penny and the Pflug brothers led Gala to a close thing in the first game losing 2-3. Portobello, spearheaded by Andy Gilhooly, Stuart Paterson and Dave Kipling, beat them in the second 5-1 to set up a deciding game against Warrender. Toby Carless scored 3 typical goals for the hosts and it seemed all over but Portobello made a spirited comeback but just failed and Warrender ended 5-4 winners. The contest was even more keenly contested than usual and most of the 60+ players (including yours truly) were happy to stay on the bench but Scotland's first 100 cap player Murray Anderson was still in there at 70. The "elder statesmen" came into their own at the after-match get-together and Charlie Grierson was on hand to present the trophy. GS.
01 Dec 06 International Duty
Dunfermline's Alasdair Campbell has been selected for the GB Junior (u/19) team which will participate in the Pan Pacific International Tournament to
be held in Calgary, Canada from December 27th - December 30th 2006. The participating teams are GB, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and USA. This will be the highest level of Water Polo that Alasdair will have experienced. The other teams are all ranked above GB. The team will be staying in Calgary after the event and will take part in training sessions with Canada and New Zealand before returning home around 5th January 2007. This is the start of the build-up to the European Youth Qualifiers in May 2007.
01 Dec 06 Licencing
The SASA is setting high standards for water polo events. with the new Licencing Regulations (WP10.5). The minimum facility requirements for friendlies is far more stringent than for internationals, although the internationalists do get seating!
01 Dec 06 Julia Mackay
Good to see Julia is getting among the goals in the National Women's League. Her team Harrogate are 2nd in Div 2 and Julia is well up the goal chart with 27. She's pretty near the top of the Major Queens as well so she's getting really involved in the action. It's Basingstoke tomorrow for weekend #4

28.11.06 Play-off withdrawal
Late News : It has been decided that Caledonia will not, after all, contest the play-off with Sutton & Cheam. There are difficulties in raising a team.  With the expense involved, and the likelihood that team would struggle to compete next year in Div 2 it has been decided that it would be better to consolidate the team's  position in Div 3. The jump to Div 2 was too much, especially with the injuries and availability. David Stewart/Murray McLeod

11.11.06  National League
Bright start to Weekend #5 for Caledonia with a 9-8 victory over Invicta. The  Man of the Match, Bruce Henderson. made a crucial save in dying seconds to stop Invicta claiming a share of the points. The fight to avoid the play-off position is now very tight. Tyldesey and Invicta are on 9 points with Caledonia on 8.
Wheels came off Caledonia's campaign in their second match, losing unexpectedly to bottom club Reading 7-11. Only hope now is for Reading to beat  Invicta while Caledonia must beat Leeds in Sunday's matches.
10.11.06 Scottish Water Polo AGM
The date for the AGM has been changed
Water Polo AGM; 30th November 2006; NSA Seminar Room (not Board Room); 1900 – 2100 hrs.
29.11.06 Message from National Convener
"Scottish Water Polo Clubs AGM - Representation
Further to the recent flurry of e-mails on the above subject, attendance at the above is open to all clubs to attend, to discuss the previous year and for the SWPC to answer any relevant questions. Convention allowed for three members from each club to attend and that will continue at the present. The “convention” to my knowledge has never been documented, and this accounts for the interpretation reached by the Office.
Any further debate should not be required and debate by e-mail should cease." HD Cullen SWPC Convenor

While pleased that Hugh has come down on the side of removing the restriction proposed by the Youth Development Officer I am disappointed that he seems to be frowning on the email exchanges which resulted from Lorraine Campbell's email. I cannot see what "accounts for the interpretation reached by the Office". Was I wrong to object and make my objection known? Messages I have received suggest I am not alone in contending that the interpretation was wrong and would have completely altered the purpose of the Statutory Meeting. George Spowart
29.11.06 Secretary's response to National Convener
"Regarding the ongoing debate re who can attend the forthcoming Water Polo Clubs AGM. It is our understanding that this meeting has always been an 'Open forum' for all interested parties to attend, should a vote be required obviously only those entitled to vote should do so however votes at these meetings are not usually required. With reference to the e-mail from Scottish Swimming earlier today, having an AGM with only those who attend the normal SWPC meetings, is very much a waste of time as no new views will be expressed and Reports will be to "themselves' indeed we fail to see how the objectives of Rule WP7.2 can be met unless it is an open forum. It is our belief that the Chairman can invite anyone to attend as an 'observer' and take part in the debate, we would suggest that you consider the immediate issue of a global invite to all interested parties to attend." B.M.Campbell
11.11.06 Dave Wallace, Western Baths
News of an unfortunate accident to a Western Baths stalwart : "For those who don't know, Dave was hit by a bus in Paisley on Wednesday lunchtime. As you can imagine it was very severe with multiple head fractures, broken eye socket and a broken jaw. Dave was admitted to Intensive Care at the Southern General on Wednesday afternoon. He has been responding well to treatment and able to answer questions. Dave was moved to ward 65 on Thursday afternoon and was up on his feet during the night. I'm sure you will all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery and offering support to Fran and their boys. Graham will keep me informed of Dave's progress and I'll pass on the information to you all as I get it." Ken Fussell

Water Polo AGM; 16th November 2006; NSA Seminar Room (not Board Room); 1900 – 2100 hrs
Response from Juliana Aitken (who circulated notice on 17 October) is that Ken Fussell  has circulated notice - she didn't know that such a group (Club Representatives) existed. I pointed out that they are not a separate group, the SWPC INCLUDES a representative from each of the polo-playing clubs. So Ken's post is all the information clubs are going to get! No agenda, no previous minutes, probably no reports.

In their second game Scotland led hosts, Wales, 9-4 at half time then faded. The score was tied 14-14 after extra time but Wales won the penalty shoot-out.  Coach, Derek Docherty, was at a loss to explain the slump. England beat Ireland 10-5 and Scotland 10-2. Scotland U15 team ran riot in a training match beating Wales 29-5 but expect a harder match in the international tomorrow.

Further update on draws for the leagues. Changes in magenta.
Men - There are a couple of changes to the draw. Western has a broken goal so their game against Portobello is changed. Menzieshill Whitehall asked to change one of their games, so Warrender will switch a night.
U/16 - Note the change in pool for Menzieshill Whitehall games. It should always have been the High School." Ken Fussell

Update on the Women's Scottish National League

We will play these games on Saturday 28th October from 15:30 till 19:30. Can clubs let me know how many players can make it along? I will need some referees, coaches and table officials as well. Can anyone let me know if they are available? I know a number of the usual suspects will be away at either Junior Men Nationals or Caledonia Men so I am looking for other volunteers please. The Domestic Convener has circulated updated draws for the leagues.
""If any team has difficulty with playing any of these games please contact me by Saturday 21 October with proposed changes. Otherwise the schedule will stand and any teams who fail to play will forfeit the game.
Note there is time at Stirling on the weekend 25 - 26 November, Brian will be running National Squad training but there is plenty of pool time to slot in any extra games. Dunfermline already have some "Home" games scheduled there.
Big Note I will not be there that weekend as the Caledonia Women are playing down south.
WOMEN : Can all clubs provide me with an idea of the number of women who are able to participate in the SNL on 28 - 29 October at Stirling! I will be running games and squad training that weekend" Ken Fussell

01.10.06 Caledonia beaten at last
The second match of the weekend resulted in a 11-14 loss to Hucknall. This match was a tale of missed chances (mainly man-up) and wrong choices taken. Although Dave Stewart was available he was 'fouled-out' in the second quarter and Caledonia suffered their first ever defeat in the National Leagues. Scorers - Calum Fraser - 3; Alasdair Campbell 2; Steven Adams; 2 Dave Baxter 1; Dave Stewart 1; Neil Strachan 2(correction)
Caledonia's final match of the weekend also resulted in defeat DWPC 12 Leeds 15. Again a story of missed chances and mistakes as the team lost their second successive match. (Reflections) (Match Reports)

Scorers : Vesolin Voynov 1; Ally Campbell 2; Steven Adams 1; David Baxter 1; Neil Strachan 2; Calum Fraser 5; Matt McGeehan 1.

16.09.06 Team Caledonia start with a win
The Division 2 campaign started well for Caledonia with a hard-fought 13-12 ( 0-2; 4-4; 4-4; 5-2) victory over Otter at Loughborough. Otter were ahead all the way until the last 2 minutes when Caledonia finally overtook them. Although Caledonia showed some good countering and covering they also gave the ball away too often and must tighten up on possession. Scorers David Baxter (2); Vesolin Voynov (2); Ryan laird (3); Mark Speed; Alasdair Campbell (2) and Calum Fraser (3).  Report
There was unexpected support from an old member when Dr. Iain McLeod (photo) turned up. Iain is still playing (for Worcester in the Midland League). He was a first seven player in the Club's Scottish and English campaigns as well as the first Malta tour in the 1980s.
20.08.06 AGM
The Club AGM will be held in Room 1 at The Carnegie Centre on Monday 30 October 2006. Senior members and parents of our Junior Members are all invited to attend - please make every effort to do so. In addition many positions within the Club remain unfilled (including that of President) with the associated tasks not being carried out - all should consider how they can contribute to managing the Club - with numbers at an all time high this is becoming more and more of an issue. Information will be issued nearer the time.
09.08.06 Home Nations Tournament (1987 or later)
Newport, Wales on 27th to 29th Oct. 2006.
14.09.06 National League changes
The programme for the NWPL this weekend has been effected by a pool problem with times etc. The following has been required to happen
    1) - Saturday v Otter will now commence at 6:45
    2) - Sunday v Tyldesley will now commence at 13:55
    3) - v Hucknall match postponed game will be rescheduled once the NWPL committee have had more time to check schedule for rest of season.
    4) - All warm up will occur behind goal and teams must be capped up and ready to start immediately previous game commences.
    5) Dave Andrews Competition Coordinator will be in attendance should we have any issues to raise.
10.09.06 National Leagues
The 2006 National Leagues started this weekend. Portobello found it tough going in the 1st Division while Lancaster and Cheltenham both won their 3 matches.
Next weekend Caledonia make their debut in the 2nd Division at Loughborough.
10.09.06 Club Tournaments
  • A very strong Lancaster side took the Awards for All Trophy in yesterday's U16 Tournament. They beat Dunfermline in the final.

  • Dunfermline seniors won the Sport for All Trophy today, beating Menzieshill Whitehall in the final.
09.09.06  Hit Counter
Our counter name seems to have been "lost" from the WebCounter database and we are getting error instead of count. We had recorded 18000 hits since I installed it last November. Hits have been pretty constant so it has served its purpose and I've just removed it.
09.09.06 Update from Secretary
  • POLO SHIRTS : Club Polo shirts are now available from Roddy MacKay. Currently Junior members can take advantage of a 50% reduction thanks to our Awards for All grant. Roddy has medium & large sizes available now, small, extra large etc can be ordered when the number required is known - try the medium or large shirts on first.
Orders can be placed with Roddy at Club sessions or you can e-mail the Club Secretary - they will be available for the tournament.
  • GB MENS PERFORMANCE COACH  : we understand that GB have appointed an ex Dutch Internationalist, with over 250 caps, as the new Men's Performance Coach with effect from 1 September 2006. Further details will be advised when known.
  • WATER POLO DEVELOPMENT PLAN : The secrecy within Scottish Water Polo / Scottish Swimming continues as we have been asked to remove the draft Water Polo Development Plan from our News page as it has not been approved by Scottish Swimming - whether the Club will ever actually receive the approved version is another matter ! The final version, which has been issued to the Board of Scottish Swimming for their approval, has been received and is available on request from the Secretary. (links removed G.S.)
  • WATER POLO TOURNAMENTS : Remember the Water Polo tournaments are taking place this weekend from 1pm on Saturday & Sunday - come along and help / support the teams. Meet at 12.30pm to help set-up the pool.
Training on Sunday evening is on as usual.
  • DEVELOPMENT / JUNIOR SQUADS : The number attending has been rising all year and a 'squad' / rota of poolside helpers needs to be built-up as those coaching the squads cannot attend all sessions due to business commitments - those willing to join the rota please advise Brian Campbell - little knowledge is required as help will be given.
  • GB REGIONAL TRAINING CENTRE : No information has been forthcoming as to when this squad will commence.
  • COMMITTEE MEETING : The next Committee meeting will be held at The Carnegie Centre at 7.30pm on Monday 11 September - members and parents are welcome to attend.
With the AGM on 30th October 2006, as previously advised, all senior members / parents of Juniors are asked to consider helping out with the Management of the Club (there are only around 5 meetings per year) - with many posts vacant (incl President) the Development of the Club is being hampered through lack of numbers, those currently involved can only do so much and activities like fund-raising; Press & Publicity; Social etc. are severely curtailed.
  • CARNEGIE CENTRE CLOSEDOWN : We have been advised that the Carnegie Centre will be closed from Monday 30 October-Sunday 26 November 2006 for annual maintenance. The Club Committee will consider alternative plans at the next meeting.
05.09.06 Club Tournaments this weekend

26.08.06 Scottish Water Polo Development Plan 2006-2012
The following received today : -
"I have been asked by the SWPC to send this email ...... concerning the requirement for Water Polo to submit a 6 year development plan to the Scottish Swimming Board of Directors in time for their Board meeting on the 10th September 2006. All disciplines have been asked to produce such a plan and the SWPC commissioned a technical subgroup to deliver this target for Water Polo on behalf of the committee. Feedback has already been received from within the subgroup, members of British Water Polo, and some members of the SWPC. The plan introduces a change to the current organisation of the sport and supports the British Water Polo vision and plans leading to London 2012. Failure to submit a plan will result in Water Polo not receiving an allocation of funds for Nov 06/Oct 07.
Please find attached version 5 of the 6 year development plan that incorporates feedback from those in attendance at the Scottish Water Polo meeting (24/08/2006). Also attached is the budget summary 2006/2007(version 2), and a summary of the sections with areas of responsibility assigned.
Any further feedback should be emailed direct to me/or provided by telephone by no later than 15.00 hrs on Monday 28th August.
Best wishes, Lorraine Campbell on behalf of the SWPC & Development Plan subgroup."

18.06.06 Serbia & Montenegro win World Cup
Serbia & Montenegro pipped hosts, Hungary, by the odd goal after 2 periods of extra time. The scores were tied at 8-8 at the end of normal time. The first extra period produced a goal apiece and the winning goal came in the second extra period. Spain took 3rd place with a 13-10 win over Croatia
17.06.06 ASA Club Senior Men's Championship
DWPC 8 Manchester 10
Missing Mark Speed who pulled out late due to illness and without their injured Coach, Alan Donaldson, DWPC got off to a bad start and were 7-3 behind midway through the second quarter. They worked hard over the next two quarters to bring it back to 7-7 with only 3 mins left. Manchester struck, with three quick goals with only one in reply from DWPC, to win a hard-fought match. Too many missed man-up chances was the order of the day. However DWPC are continuing to close the gap with the top GB teams which is encouraging for the forthcoming National League campaign.
Scorers : Calum Fraser (3);  David Baxter (2); Alasdair Campbell; Stewart Carlile & Alan Shepherd 1 each.
17.06.06 Congratulations
Ross Elder, former SASA Water Polo Convener, has been appointed to the chair of the Officials sub-committee of the NWPL. Summary of Ross's career in water polo.

There will be an open session for the Scottish Women's Water Polo Senior Squad on the weekend of June 10 and 11. This is an invitation to all interested players to attend.

There will be a conflict on the Sunday for some U/18 players who will be playing in the Scottish Cup finals. Also the Edinburgh Marathon is being run on the Sunday morning from 9:00 am and the course goes right past the pool! Allow lots of time to get there and you may have to park far away.
The plan is to select a squad of about 20 players from which teams will be selected for the required events throughout the next 12 months.
Events this year include:
>> NWWPL Div 3 that covers 6 weekends playing at various venues in England. (Excluding anyone already playing for a club in the NWWPL)
>> International Waterpolo Tournament, Oosterhout, the Netherlands 1 - 3 Sept 2005.
>> Swedish Invite tournament in November 2005. (I'm not sure of the details).
>> There will also be a Women's competition in the Scottish National League in the Autumn for the Scottish clubs to enter.
There will also be about 7 training weekends in the same period. A calendar of events will be available and updated regularly. It is expected that the players be committed to the squad.
That means that we expect you to be available for 80% of the games and 90% of the training sessions.
We are interested in all female players who qualify  for playing for Scotland. (See SASA rules if you are
in doubt). Including Scottish players not resident in Scotland.
Could you please pass this invite onto anyone you think maybe interested.
To give me an idea of numbers I would like the players to email their intention to attend to myself.
If there are any questions please feel free to contact me by email or phone.

13.03.06 Scottish Cup Competitions

Sorry for the delay in sending this out, I have been trying to secure pool time. The 2006 Scottish Cup competitions will run as follows.

  • The juniors (U/14 and U/16) will have a round robin round then the top two will play the final. The third team will take third place in the competition.
  • The U/21 Malta cup has 2 entries only so will play a final.
  • Senior Men, there are 5 teams entered and I have done a draw out of a hat.
    1. Menzieshill/Whitehall
    2. Portobello
    3. Dunfermline
    4. Western Baths
    5. Warrender
They will play semi finals then a final.
    1 vs 2
    3 vs 4/5
The last two teams in the draw will play off for the
fourth place in the semi finals at Western Baths home pool.
  • I would like to also run a Women's competition. Based on the attendance at the League games last year we can get two definite teams, Menzieshill/Whitehall and Western Baths. There is a possibility of forming a third team mainly of Dunfermline with some from Warrender and anyone else we can get. Could someone from each club contact me about this ASAP.
If we get 3 teams there will be a round robin then
final, if only two teams then a final only.
  • Scottish Cup Finals will be held all on the one day. That will be 7 games in total as follows.
    Men Semi 1
    Men Semi 2
    U14 Final
    U21 Final
    U16 Final
    Women's Final
    Men's Final
At 1 1/3 hours per game that will be 9 = hours of pool
    time.
  • Pool time becomes an issue. Dunfermline has entered the ASA Cup in both Men and U/16 so there are weekends that they will not be available. May is difficult because of school and Uni exams. There may be time available at Stirling on Saturday 29th April that could be used to play the Men's Semi Finals.
  • The only possible weekends for the Finals would be June 10th / 11th or June 24th / 25th.
An earlier possibility would be May 27th/28th.
  • Could all teams let me know which dates they are available. I will notify the entry cost once I have a better idea of the dates required.

Ken Fussell, Domestic Convener

08.03.06 Commonwealth Games
Extract, regarding water polo in the Commonwealth Games, from recent ASFGB Meeting
06.03.06 Swim Event
"An excellent swim from four Club members representing InCAS in the16 & over BOYS 200m Relays in the East District Age Group Championships held at Glenrothes over the weekend.-
Ali Campbell; David Stewart; Calum Fraser & Dougie Campbell came in a
creditable third in the Medley relay only 3 secs behind Warrender A & B and took an excellent second place in the Freestyle relay behind Warrender B (by 0.28 secs) and touching-out Warrender A (by 0.01 secs) in what was a superb race throughout.
Split times in the Medley event were : Back (Ali) - 29.86; Breast (Dougie)
- 31.64; Fly (Calum) - 26.7 & Free (Davie) - 25.6
Split times in the freestyle event were - Ali Campbell - 25.85; Dave
Stewart - 25.47; Calum Fraser - 25.78 & Dougie Campbell - 24.7
It could be argued however that this is a sad reflection on Swimming where
so few teams competed in the 'older' age groups and a team of ageing Water Polo players (average age over 30yrs) were able to achieve second place - water polo players cannot be that unfit after all ??" B.M.Campbell

The Club has received an invitation to take part in an International Tournament for U15 and U17s to be staged between 19th and 24th July 2006 by the Exiles club in Malta. We need to gauge interest and availability. Besides players we need to identify a coach and a manager/organiser. It is likely that a week's stay would be involved. Exiles are pre-booking lodgings and costings will have to be made but cost of the trip might be around 400GBP each. There should not be a problem if players from other clubs wished to make up our teams if we are unable to supply full complement. To express an interest contact the Club Secretary as soon as possible. B.M.Campbell

25.01.06 Appeal for assistance at East District and national levels
Message from Keith Johnston
to the Scottish water polo community
Please read and note Keith's comments - Assistance required. Members interested in helping out should contact the Club Secretary in the first instance - the Manager's role is not difficult and is rewarding, guidance is available. Little water polo knowledge is required just some organisational skills - if we want the Junior squads to continue to progress staff are required to supplement those still involved.
There are currently three Junior Boys squads with Stewart Carlile managing the National Academy squad and me coaching them, the other two squads are Youth & Junior. From September this year the age groups become - Nat Acad - 1993+, Youth - 1991+, Junior - 1989+. Currently there are no equivalent Girls' squads however to start these staff would also be required.
Members available to attend on 8 Feb should also advise me. The District job again is not difficult or time consuming and is more of a coordinators role with regular reports submitted to the East District, it is hoped that a Regional Training Centre (u/14 age group) can be considered in due course - coaches are available. Unfortunately again there is a lack of staff to run and manage it.
Non-members who are interested in the above and would like to offer assistance can make contact through the Club Secretary or contact Scottish Swimming at Stirling direct.
If we can find enough people to do a little we can achieve a lot - the same applies to the Management of the Club. B.M.Campbell

Team Captain Fiona Greer said: "It was a good win to give ourselves some confidence that we can compete at this level."
Greer, of Hammersmith Penguin, scored 4 and Menzieshill Whitehall's Caroline Connor scored two. Dunfermline 's Julia MacKay and Gael Logan, and Warrender's Katie Matthews, Cathy Burns and Lucy MacGregor scored a goal apiece.
23.01.06 Competition Entries
Club will be entering the following GB competitions in 2006
Senior Men - British Championships & ASA Men's Club Championship
Boys  - ASA Men's Club Youth (1990) Championship
Although half our "Youth" team will be 1993+ we are treating this as a Development opportunity and a chance to test ourselves against better teams/players. All the players are looking forward to the competition although they realise that the games will be difficult . The first round will be held in early April. In the spirit of the Caledonia composite arrangement three Menzieshill players will represent DWPC in the boys competition and three from DWPC will represent Menzieshill in the girls competition (the numbers involved are a coincidence rather than a balancing act !!). 19.01.06 More News from Perth by Matt McGeehan
  • Please find below a link to a piece in a sports gossip column in the West Australian newspaper.
Rhys Tamlyn's team were heavily defeated by a UWA Torpedoes team which contained former Lancaster skipper Sean Love on Wednesday night. The match made the headlines in Perth's local newspaper.
"SP What? (The West Australian, www.thewest.com.au (note : digital edition costs!), Thursday 19 January 2006, p 55)
Judging by their skin hue, the Welsh water polo team hasn't got the Slip, Slop, Slap message [The Commonwealth Water Polo Championships are promoting safety in the sun, slip on a t-shirt, slop on a hat and slap on the sunscreen].
In town to prepare for next week's Commonwealth titles, the Welsh are as scarlet as their country's rugby jerseys and, consequently, practice matches against the UWA Torpedoes have been more tag than full-contact."
  • Note, the Scotland ladies team have been a lot more sensible!

Scotland will attempt to resolve some tactical and technical issues in the pool tonight. Theo Bampouras's team play Dolphins in their final warm-up match before they play Canada on Monday in their first match in the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships.
Captain Fiona Greer is a slight injury concern with a niggling shoulder problem, but the team are well rested after a boat cruise to Freemantle on Wednesday

17.01.06 Scottish Women have tough start to preparation in Perth
SCOTLAND 3 - MELVILLE 30, Challenge Stadium, Perth, WA (Monday 16 January 2006)
SCOTLAND began their Commonwealth Championships preparations with a defeat to the Australian National League champions of the last two seasons, Melville Sharks. Coach Theo Bampouras said: "It was a learning experience for the team against a very high standard of opposition." The Melville team contained a Gold medallist from the Sydney Olympics, two members of the Athens 2004 Australian Olympic Team, a World Championships Team member from 1998 and an Australian under 20 international who spent the past season playing professional Water Polo in Italy.

04.01.06 A Message from Malta
"In your excellent website I noticed you've included a 1984 photo of when your club was in Malta and won a trophy during a tournament organised by Exiles SC... and it happens to be the first trophy you won!! Well, if you're interested, I invite you to visit our website www.exiles.com.mt
Furthermore, we may be organising an international tournament in Malta next Summer... keep in touch if you'd be interested in participating.
Best regards" Sandro Caruana, Hon Secretary, Exiles SC
I remember it well. Exiles were a very friendly club and made us very welcome. "Humph" (Colin Braund) wasn't too happy - he ended up with very painful sea urchin spines in his feet getting out of the sea over the rocks - the pitch was roped off with no "walls", the referee perched on a rock on the shore. Exiles had an enthusiastic record keeper who had all the club's records carefully preserved and available to show off. Well worth a visit if the tournament comes off. Malta was the stepping stone to the Club's success in the 80s and 90s. G.S.
