Bag Packing Update - Message from Zach

In our final fundraiser of the year (bag packing at M&S) today we made £557.04, one Plastic coin, one cent and one euro! Although I was hoping for a bit more...this is still an excellent sum to have collected. Thanks to all of those who came out to help today despite the snow. This takes our bag packing total to £1186.95
I'd also like to thank all of the staff at M&S and their customers for their kind donations. Once again, well done to everyone! Have a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year. See you early 2010 to start the ASA Cup preparations!

Bag Packing - Message from Zach

We are now halfway through our bag packing marathon at M&S and at this stage we have raised £629.91 (and one US dime). Well done to all of those who helped out on the first day! Those who have volunteered to help out on Wednesday should remember to turn up on time and WEARING A DWPC T-SHIRT where possible, if not dress fairly smartly (or at least cleanly). Those who have forgotten what time they are doing should contact me ASAP...and if you can't make your slot please let me know in advance. Thanks again.
Cheers,
Zach

Message From Scottish Waterpolo Convenor

Hi all,

The Commonwealth Water Polo Championships will be held next year 2010 in India from 24th April to 29th April. The event will be held in either Goa or Bangalore . Details are yet to be received as well as the official invitation.

This is very short notice for such an event but we have always assumed that the event was going to take place in 2010.

In the meantime I would like to gauge the level of interest of players of competent level who would like to compete in the event.

At this stage there is no funding available for the trip. Players should assume that they will be paying for the event themselves. A ball park figure would be about £1500. This is just an estimate based on current airfares of £500 and looking at the costs paid for the 2006 event. The figure will change as more information is obtained.

Efforts will be made to secure funding from various sources but at this stage I need to confirm that the players are committed

So if you or players you know are interested can you let me know via email as soon as possible and by the 20th December at the latest.

There will be a lot of other questions and decisions to be made, I ask you all to bear with me for the moment and focus on the one question of player commitment at this stage.

Regards

Ken Fussell

Two Out of Two for Dunfermline

Dunfermline have had a fantastic day at Stirling. The day started with Dunfermline taking on Menzieshill Whitehall in the U18s Scottish Cup final. Dunfermline won this 23 - 5 (6-0, 5-3, 3-2, 9-0). Team and goals scored: J Hinley, A Johnstone, N Tate (2), A Melville (2), Z Thomson (Capt), D Campbell (7), C Campbell (9), B Mooney, C Ironside (1), C Mooney, J Thomson, K Falconer,

C Wilkinson (2) Match Report

Next came the Ladies final, also against Menzieshill Whitehall. Both teams were low on numbers, we had eight players, they had nine, so everyone had a large amount of water time! This was a match that was very close, highly competitive and played in a manner that was a credit to both teams and was highly entertaining to watch. In fact, general consensus was that this had been the best of all the finals played. There was never more than one goal in it, but Dunfermline came out eventual winners 8 - 7 (1-1, 2-1, 2-3, 3-2). Team and goals scored: C Guillot, N Tate (4), K Falconer (2), A Tate, G Logan (Capt), C Mooney, B Mooney, T Bonnar (2)

A huge thank you must go to Chantal Guillot (GK) who was originally not available to play today because of work commitments, but managed to swap her shift, now working instead on Boxing Day. That is what you call true dedication to the team!!

05 Dec 09 Finals Place for Dunfermline Ladies

Dunfermline Ladies cruised to a place in tomorrows Scottish Cup final beating Western/Warrender

11 - 3. Tomorrow they face Menzieshill Whitehall who beat Edinburgh University 15 - 6 in today's other semi final. Team and goal scorers: C Guillot, J Bush (5), N Tate (3), K Falconer, C Mooney, A Tate, B Mooney, G Logan (1), T Bonnar (2)

In tomorrow's other final Dunfermline U18s take on Menzieshill Whitehall.

01 Dec 09

Message From Neal Rayner, Waterpolo Development Officer

Hello,
Scottish Water Polo has been invited to enter a Girls 1993+ team in an upcoming regional tournament held by the ASA.
This tournament would be on the 13th and 14th of February. The location has not been named yet. I'll need to decide whether to enter the team by next Monday so please send your RSVP before this weekend.
While we've not formed a Scotland junior women's squad for a few years, we'd like to. However, we'd need commitment from many of Scotland's current 1993+s to play in order to have a team.
I do not have contact emails for all of the 1993+ ladies so please forward this to any you know of. We have a few strong and experienced 1993+ players and feel this would be a great learning environment for the less experienced players. We'd endeavor to have a couple of trainings in January 16/17? and Feb 6th/7th (weekends) which would be open to all girls in Scotland in this age group that are registered SASA members. We'd be happy to have girls new to water polo who have strong swim skills and or decent swim skills mixed with good ball skills and enjoying aggressive sports come try out.
Travel and Accommodation would be self-funding and would likely be in the range of £60-75 per girl.
Best,
Neal

Please let me know if you want anything ordered from Turbo over the coming year and I will try and make a small Bulk order to get best optimisation from the discount. If anyone would like any more information or would like to order some of the clubs trunks/costumes please contact me (smetcalfe88@hotmail.com) If unsure of size we will try and get a selection of sizes from people to try on. Proposed DWPC costume designs

The designs are in the membership consultation stage, as its fair that the players have a say on the design of the trunks/costume that we should get. Three of the designs have been provided by Turbo Water polo and the 4th option is the clubs current design.
The chosen design will have to be the same design for both male and female trunks and costumes as this means that there is only one set up cost required to be paid. Simon

Willie Mellor's Invitational Tournament 2010

The Willie Mellor's Invitational Tournament 2010 will take place at HMS TEMERAIRE in Portsmouth on Sunday 7th March 2010. I anticipate travelling either Fri 5 Mar PM or early Sat AM returning 7 Mar late PM. It may be possible for us to have access to the pool on the Saturday for training either separately or with the Combined services team, thus making it a more worthwhile weekend. The SWPC has made some funding available towards the event, however a personal contribution may be required. The opposition is expected to be of at least NWPL Div3 standard and similar to the 2009 event.

The selection criteria will remain as in previous years with the team being made up primarily of players 25 and under although a limited number of older players may be invited along to provide additional experience to the team. It is intended to hold a number of open training/selection sessions in Jan/Feb 2010 at Stirling in preparation. Ian MacCallum has again agreed to coach the squad for this event and I will assist as team manager.

In order to gauge player availability for this event, please could you publicise this information around your senior players and invite them to let me know if they are interested and available, also providing me with their contact details (e-mail/mobile number).

Many thanks

Richie Metcalfe

Goals at Kirkcaldy

With many thanks to Fife Sport and Leisure Trust, Kirkcaldy swimming pool is now equipped with a set of brand new match sized floating goals. The goals were suitably tested by a number of our senior players last Saturday and survived the punishing shots of Callum Fraser and Zach Thomson despite Simon’s attempts to protect the goal! Photo

This equipment will be a valuable addition to this facility which now provides DWPC with means to host home games in a Fife Trust pool and increases the opportunity to further develop our training and skills. Training for seniors and older junior players takes place in Kirkcaldy most Saturdays 1730 – 1900 (check website), we are also looking at taking advantage of this new equipment in a deep water pool by holding some sessions and games here for our younger players in the future.

Message from Neal Rayner

Ladies and Gentlemen,
There will be an open Ladies 5-a-side water polo festival Saturday Sept 19th 2:30-5:30PM at Edinburgh University 's St Leonard 's pool. There will be two categories: Junior (10-18) and open and juniors can play in both if they like. I've attached a promotional flyer which can be posted at your pools as well.
This is a new location and date from when this was originally proposed! Please encourage your club ladies to come and have them email me their intention to come if they haven't already. Others can sign up at 2:00PM on the day of the event. It is free!!!!
Its open to all ladies and those who are very new to the sport should be encouraged to come and play. I and a few helpers will create teams with the intention of creating an even playing field. This is intended to be a very inclusive event so even those who can't make it for the full time are encouraged to come and play.
As it will help organization immensely I prefer for ladies to email their sign-up so I can know expected numbers!
Best,
Neal Rayner

Scotland 91s Beaten

Scotland 91s have been beaten in their final match of the weekend by North West 14 - 18. Hopefully more details will follow. Thanks to Chris Woodall for keeping me up to date this weekend.

P.S Following received from Brian on Monday:

The matches in the final grouping against South East (Invicta) and the North West (Lancaster & Manchester combined) were of a high quality with neither team more than two goals in front. The scores were level going into the final quarter of each match however we were not able to take our chances. We were effectively using only nine players in these matches due to the inexperience of some of our younger players at this level and the inevitable tiredness contributed to the many chances we created in the final quarters of each of the matches being spurned.

Winning the second quarter 5-1 against the North West was perhaps the best spell of the weekend, indeed we gained eleven majors in this game as we developed and implemented a mobile 'arc' attack which suited the strengths (and relative size) of our players.

The 'controversy' referred to in the win over the South East in our first match against them was that a mistake made by the table led to us having to replay the final minute of the third period thereby taking away not only two goals we had scored but also a third major Christopher had collected, as we scored one goal in the re-played minute and retained Christopher for the final period we certainly gained from this 'honest' mistake as we came through to win an excellent match.

Overall the standard of our play was excellent throughout the weekend with the players playing with discipline and control to follow our game plans. With half the team 1993+ we were effectively playing against the 1991+ GB squad and our performance should be considered with this in mind. The behaviour of our squad was, as usual, exemplary and indeed seven of the team will feature for Caledonia and one for Portobello in the forthcoming Senior National League campaigns in Division 3 and 1 respectively.

The competition itself was well organised with full length matches, timing equipment and a good, consistent standard of refereeing supervised by ASA delegate Rodger Hargreaves who complemented our team on their efforts at the end of the tournament. North West were the winners, South East runners-up and we finished in third place.

With the recent matches in Wales and this competition the team has made a good return to competitive polo which it is hoped to build upon for next year and beyond, there is talk of this competition continuing and possibly a 1993+ version being introduced early in 2010.

Defeat for Scotland

Scotland have lost their first match today. They were beaten 13 -14 (7 - 6 at HT) by South East. They play their last match against North West which they have to win by a margin of three goals I am reliably informed.

05 Sep 09

Another Win for Scotland

Scotland have won their second match of the day. They beat South East 15 - 14 in a match full of controversy. I have no details of goal scorers as two goals were ultimately disallowed. Hopefully we will get a coaches report which will shed more light on the matter.

Tomorrow Scotland face North West and South East.
p.s. (text from Brian) : scorers Chris Campbell, 4 Darren Campbell 3, Lewis Dawson 6, Andrew Woodall 1, Lewis Don 1 (the winner). A great comeback by the team. They were 6-11 down early in the 3rd period after an error-strewn start. From this point on they stepped up 3 gears for a deserved win. This takes both Scotland and South East teams into the top group tomorrow along with North West.
Group B results South East 20 E Midlands 3; East Midlands 2 Scotland 22; South East 14 Scotland 15. Group A : North West 20 South West 3; North West 25 West Midlands 8; South West 11 West Midlands 9.

GB hit hard by Germany
GB Juniors lost their final match in Turkey going down 3-15 (1-2; 0-4; 0-6; 2-3) to Germany. Unfortunately this was a poor team performance. The Germans were more aware and sharper throughout. GB gave the ball away too cheaply all through the game. Team lacked the fight shown against Turkey. Overall the tournament has been a hard lesson but that is what was intended. The players have a lot of work to do if they are to qualify for the European Championships next year.
Final placings:- 1. GER : 2. TUR "A" : 3. FRA ; 4. TUR "B" : 5. GBR : 6. UKR

22 Aug 09

GB lose to hosts
After a disastrous 1st period GB boys turned in a much better performance for the rest of the game but went down 9-12 (1-6; 3-2; 1-2; 4-2) to the Turkish "A" team. Darren and Chris scored one each. No fewer than 11 majors against but excellent defence apart from the 1st period. Their final match is against favourites Germany tomorrow morning.

21 Aug 09

GB dip
GB suffered a 5-7 defeat at the hands of Turkey "B" (4-1; 0-1; 1-5; 0-0). This was a relatively poor performance where the team "chased the game" and took too many poor shots. Two goals for Darren and 1 for Christopher. Tomorrow GB face Turkey "A".

21 Aug 09

GB step it up
GB had a good performance in their second game. They beat Ukraine 12-7 (1-2; 5-1; 2-3; 4-1). Two apiece for the twins. This afternoon they face Turkey "B".

21 Aug 09

GB lose opener
GB met France in their first match in the Istanbul tournament. The team was "just off the plane" yesterday and found it hard going, losing 4-12 (2-3; 2-2; 0-5; 0-2). Chris Campbell scored one of the GB goals. Next opponents are Ukraine this morning.
Team is : Goalkeepers- Dylan Smith (Lancaster), Mathew Winstanley-Smith (Manchester); Outfield - Birmingham - Morgan Hirsch (Capt), Graham Harrington; Lancaster - Mathew Grieve (Vice Capt), Elliot Trafford,, Decland Ellwood; DWPC - Darren Campbell, Christopher Campbell; Manchester - Max Gilmour; Invicta - Daniel Casey, Bradley Harvey; Welsh Wanderers - Daniel Jones; Sheffield - George Rix; Coach : Phil Powell, Assistant Coach : Brian Campbell; Manager : Jill Trafford

The Campbell's Adventures

Darren and Christopher have arrived back from Romania and Slovakia which, despite the travel to and from Slovakia , was a very good and enjoyable trip. They played for Clujes-Napoca and came in second in the tournament which was held in Slovakia . They narrowly lost the first match 9-8 to Slovakian side Zilina losing the final period 5-1 after Christopher had been fouled out - missed chances cost them in a game they should have won. The key match was then against Czech team Opavia which the team won 9-8 coming back from behind to win the fourth period 4-2.
Other results were a 20-5 win over home team Vrutky and 17-4 win over Presov. Outwith the official competition they also lost 16-9 against Vrutky's 1991+ team although Darren missed that game with a sore shoulder. The twins played well but also made mistakes which hopefully they will learn from, they scored 37 goals between them (out of 62) and enjoyed playing in an outdoor pool for the first time and with a wonderful view . Photos

The membership project group has now met and debated a number of issues. We have created a paper and a survey that capture a range of options for member feedback. We would value your views on this paper – please call or email Elaine Mackenzie on e.mackenzie@scottishswimming.com 01786 466 522 in order to provide your views. Please see below for your info and comment.

Member Consultation on Membership Management: Categories and Fees

All members of Swimming Clubs affiliated to Scottish Swimming pay a membership fee. We have over 17,500 registered members of affiliated Clubs. The revenue generated from membership fees is an important source of income for Scottish Swimming amounting to c£350k per annum (target next year of £365K). The income allows us to leverage funds from other partners, including sportscotland. Our annual budget, including membership income, is spent on support for swimmers at every stage of the swimmer pathway, including a swimming development tool box, swiMark (a club development resource), teacher and coach education, and performance programmes.

It is important that the governing body remain customer focused in the management of its members and the collection of the fees. A membership project group has been formed to determine whether we should retain the status quo or try a new approach to the management of our members (categories and fees).

To facilitate the review process, we have created a very brief online survey to gather your views. This survey has been prepared to find out how members think that membership categories should be managed and how the burden of membership fees should be distributed.

The survey can be found at the following link and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Link: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey-intro.zgi?p=WEB229E3HQURGA

We would be grateful for feedback on the survey and/or the paper by the 15th of August after which the paper will be amended based on comments and survey results and sent to the Membership Project Group and Board for consideration in early September.

With thanks,

The team at Scottish Swimming

Message From Scottish Waterpolo Development Officer

Ladies (& Coaches),
In the spirit of enjoying water polo with ladies your own age and developing future stars I am looking at forming a Junior Scottish Women's squad.
I would appreciate knowing if this is something that appeals to you or any of the ladies in your clubs. We'd probably train a few times a year and find one or two competitions annually (probably an U 19 and a U16, though U21 and U15 U14 competitions could come up as well) and have a few specific trainings before each to prepare. However, as a few of you would likely be the core of that group, I'd love to have any input you have as what sort of training and competitions would appeal to you.
I'm not sure of the age ranges but I can say we just turned down a ladies spot to play as Scotland in an under 19 competition (born 1991 and later) simply because we don't have a team set up. I'd like to make sure we don't pass this up again especially as we have a lot of younger girls coming up through mini-polo right now who have expressed interest in playing more. I'm hoping we'll soon be targeting promising young ladies from around Scotland to join such a squad, but we can't do that until such a squad is formed. This would also hopefully complement our Regional Training Center.
Also, if you have suggestions who you would like to coach this group, I'd love to hear them. Obviously, for any "Scottish" team we have to have proper coach selection procedures followed but your suggestions will be taken seriously as it would be your team. Nonetheless, we'd make sure you had a high level coach that you'd enjoy being coached by.
Best,
Neal Rayner
Water Polo Development Officer

Rescheduled Open Meeting

The Club's Open Meeting will now be held on Tuesday 23rd June 2009 at 7.30pm in the Del Farquarson Centre. All senior players, members and parents of junior members are urged to attend the meeting to discuss the future of the club. There are a few important issues to try and resolve. Despite the club having two of its most successful years , particularly at junior level, we have just recently seen the resignation of our Head Coach and temporary secretary. Compounded by falling membership and
revenue, probably due to our shift from Carnegie Centre and a total of four committee members trying to run the club, it has become apparent that this situation is not sustainable. We need the support of everyone involved in this club to ensure it has a future. A future that will take us back to a fantastic new facility at Carnegie Centre where we can hopefully build on the foundations that have been laid over the past few years.

The items for discussion are:
1 Fundamental direction of club
2 Increase in Committee support ( many hands make light work )
3 Coaching Strategy
4 Financial issues ( Can the club remain solvent? )
5 If we can resolve the first four, lets start building a social, fun
side to the club

From the Waterpolo Development Officer

Hello Water Polo Enthusiasts,

Many of you have asked during the water polo committee meetings to see the Scottish Swimming Facilities Plan 2009-2014 I'm happy to say the draft of this is now available for everyone to see online and it welcomes you to provide feedback by May 15th. From a water polo standpoint I recommend you do; nicely and concisely please as Scottish Swimming is strongly supporting creating facilities that serve the swimming and water polo community. Please forward this information to people in your clubs that are interested as I know not everyone reads the Scottish Swimming website. http://www.scottishswimming.com/index.php?id=794 . While I recommend reading the entire document I will point out the following is said about water polo:

Water Polo – Recreational club level water polo is serviced effectively by local and regional swimming pools. However, there is a requirement for pools hosting international events to have the following dimensions:

· Men: length 20.6 - 30.6m, width 10 - 20m

· Women: length 20.6 - 25.6m, width 10 - 20m

These pool dimensions can normally be accommodated within existing pools, but the larger field of play only if there is an 8 lane (2.5m width/lane) x 50m pool. For national and international competition there is a requirement for a 2m constant depth.

ASA JUNIOR (under 19) CUP FINAL
===============================

Dunfermline 9 Invicta 10 (2-2, 2-2, 3-4 & 2-2)

This proved to be a very exciting and closely fought match with Invicta ahead for all but a short time. Our team, which had only four over 15 players, performed well against an older and bigger Invicta team and, had we taken our chances in the final period could have won the match.

The teams traded goals in the first quarter after Invicta opened the scoring to leave them tied at 2-2 after the first quarter. The second quarter followed exactly the same pattern with teams ending the first half of the match tied at 4-4. The third quarter was the decisive one. Following a bad man-up from Dunfermline two goals were lost in quick succession without reply before goals were scored by each side. With Invicta winning the quarter 4-3 they had edged ahead 8-7 going into the final quarter.
Dunfermline started the period strongly and with 5 minutes to play had tied the match at 9-9. Chances were missed by both sides before Invicta scored the decisive goal with just over 1 minute to play, despite pushing forward Dunfermline were unable to find the goal which would have taken the match into extra time.

Throughout the match Jake Hinley continued the form which took us into the final with many excellent saves to keep us in the match. We were indeed 2 goals behind four times during the match and kept on coming back.
Invicta were a good team and we pushed them to the wire unfortunately we did not take our chances and Invicta did.

Scorers : Lewis Dawson 3, Lewis Don, Darren Campbell & Andrew Woodall 2 each
Man-up : 2 from 5 (+ 1 penalty) scored Man down : 2 from 3 saved.

Team : Jake Hinley, Robert Tate, Andrew Melville, Lewis Don, Zach Thomson,
Darren Campbell, Christopher Campbell, Jordan Wood, Andrew Woodall, Craig
Wilkinson, Lewis Dawson, Logan Shepherd & Joe Thomson.

Dunfermline also had an official present. Paul Metcalfe was invited to be one of the referees and presided over two of the four finals.

GB Funding Crisis

Brian Campbell has written a letter to Scottish Swimming regarding the GB funding crisis. Any comments, please email Brian.

17 Apr 09 Scottish Water Polo Committee
The next Meeting of the SWPC is scheduled for Wednesday, 22 April. Any items which members wish to be brought up, or matters from minutes of previous meeting, should be forwarded to Richie Metcalfe or Brian Campbell as soon as possible. On the Agenda it is intimated that the Domestic Coordinator has resigned.
17 Apr 09 East District
Good to see that Iain Woolley, the District WP Convener was spreading the word at the March Delegates meeting
"Iain Wooley, Water Polo Convenor, gave a interesting presentation on Water Polo within the District. His main theme was that Water Polo was declining as a Sport and it was imperative that all East District club coaches support swimmers who would like to participate in Water Polo. Water Polo participation is increasing across the border in England due to a lot of hard work by ASA to support the sport. The appointment of a Water Polo Development Officer, Neal Rayner by SASA is hoped to have a positive effect on Water Polo as we move forward. There is also a need to develop Water Polo Technical Officials and to communicate with Pool providers to ensure that Water Polo equipment is provided as pools are refurbished or replaced."
There are 47 clubs in the East District alone - only 4 feature water polo and 1 or 2 more "feed" the water polo playing clubs.
15 Apr 09 Upcoming Fixture
The 2008 1994+ joint League and Cup match will be played against Warrender/Portobello on Tuesday 28 April 2009 at 8pm.
15 Apr 09 Match report
Our 1992+ team played a joint 2008 Scottish league and Cup match against Warrender at Portobello,
Dunfermline won 16-5 (2-3, 1-0, 7-0 & 6-2)
Dunfermline started this game with our main players on the bench for the first two quarters. This made the game very competitive and gave our fringe players good match experience. With the main players introduced in the third quarter a lead was built-up quickly and this was further increased when the rotation of the players continued in the final quarter.
Scorers : Darren Campbell & Jordan Wood 3, Andrew Melville, Zach Thomson & Christopher Campbell 2, Toni Bonnar, Craig Wilkinson, Luke Thomson & Calum Ironside.
Team : Jake Hinley, Joe Thomson, Alexander Johnstone, Darren Campbell, Jordan Wood, Andrew Melville, Zach Thomson, Christopher Campbell, Toni Bonnar, Craig Wilkinson, Luke Thomson & Calum Ironside.
Domestic Coordinator, Jonathan Hepburn, has confirmed that we are the winners of the delayed 2008 1992+ league. Congratulations to the players.

06 Apr 09 Scots win in Cardiff - updated
Scottish Team -
Dunfermline : Andrew Woodall, Robert Tate, Zach Thomson, Andrew Melville, Jordan Wood, Darren Campbell, Christopher Campbell & Jake Hinley.
Menzieshill : Sam O'Connor, Lewis Don & Logan Shepherd.
Portobello : Lewis Dawson.
The team played very well and controlled the match going into a four goal lead after the first quarter. With the players being rotated the match slowed down in the second quarter which as drawn taking us to 5-1 at half-time. The pace was picked-up again for the final two quarters which we won 6-3 and
4-1. This was a good return to action for this age group after a few years absence. Our play was disciplined with very few mistakes and turn-overs offered to the Welsh team.
Scorers : Lewis Dawson 5, Darren Campbell 3, Lewis Don 2, Andrew Woodall 2, Robert Tate, Christopher Campbell & Jordan Wood.
Man-up - 5 scored from 7 (71%); Man down - 2 saved from 4 (50%)
The format gave each team two 2.5hr sessions prior to the game and a mini tournament on the Sunday with all players mixed together to form four teams. Brian Campbell Photos

News From Club Coach

Training has been cancelled on Saturday, 4 April 2009.

The Club has learned that GB High Performance Director, Nick Hume, has resigned from his position as the dismantling of the GB Water polo high performance infrastructure continues in the wake of the withdrawal of funding by UK Sport and British Swimming. Nick has been instrumental in driving through various initiatives which have moved GB Water polo forward over the past few years and which many of our younger members have benefitted from. The Club thanks him for his considerable efforts and wish him and his family well for the future.

From Club Coach

Both games against Romanians were won 11-8
ASA Cup - team played well but lost many chances to win against both Sheffield and Invicta. The Birmingham game didn't matter and I treated it as a training game.
We eventually received the Shield we won last year ( Lancaster were hiding it!) and a new team photo was taken.
Better report to follow during the week.

Cup Defence Over for 93s

DWPC 93s team have failed to qualify for the finals of the ASA Cup. They got off to a good start beating Exeter 8-2. They then drew with Sheffield 5-5. They were beaten 6-7 by Invicta and lost their final game 3-10 to Birmingham. I believe that as they could not qualify going into the last match the younger players got some time in the water. Team Captain, Zach Thomson says "thanks to everyone for their effort. We now need to get back to training and get fit ready for next year".

14 Mar 09

Wins for GB Academy Team

30 Jan 09 Website Menus problem reported
We've been using the drop-down and fly-out menus for some time now and I hadn't had any feedback of problems. Today I had a report that on a couple of systems, running Internet Explorer #6, the fly-out menus which should operate from the INFO>General Resources and INFO>Administration drop-downs do not appear. Similarly the fly-out menus from the ARCHIVE>Scottish Cups and ARCHIVE Other Scottish do not appear. Before I try to correct the problem would anybody else who doesn't get the fly-outs please let me know - especially if with browser other than IE6. George

ASA CUP - 2009
==============
We have entered the 1991+ & 1993+ boys competitions again this year which we expect will be played during March / April 2009. Senior players should note that Senior/Junior sessions will be geared towards this squad as they prepare for these competitions. Attendance by Senior players will be appreciated to provide opposition for the team and it is hoped that you will attend whenever possible. Maximum attendance by those involved in the squads is required as we have to raise our standard again from last year.

Membership Fees
===============
These are due now either in cash or via your standing order at an additional £2 per month.

We require to make a return by 31 March 2009, those who have not paid their fees will not be re-registered and therefore will be unable to attend training or represent the Club in matches.

2008 Scottish Cups
Due to a number of reasons the 2007 cup competitions were not played until May / June 2008. To avoid a repeat of this and to try to put some structure back into the Water Polo calendar I am proposing that the 2008 Scottish Cup competitions be cancelled.

The 2009 cup competition will be played in Autumn / Winter of this year following the completion of the league competitions which will hopefully finish around the end of spring / beginning of the summer.
An email will be issued shortly regarding the 2009 competitions. The League format will consist of a home match, an away match and a Central venue deep water match i.e. each team will play each other 3 times.
Please can you speak to your clubs and let me know your thoughts on the cancelling of the 2008 cup competition and if there are any strong objections. Members with any views on the above proposed cancellation should e-mail
Jonathan at : Jonathan.Hepburn@rbs.co.uk

From Brian: My own view is that an attempt should be made to play as many of the 2008 Cup competitions as possible in a central venue as soon as possible, certainly for the junior competitions only a few games are required.

16 Jan 09

Training Cancelled

Due to maintenance work taking longer than planned there will be no training at HMS Caledonia on Monday 19th January 2009.

SPORTS AWARDS
=============
The Club will be represented at the Sports Awards in two categories -
The Rotary Club of Dunfermline Junior team award & Sport Tayside & Fife Coach of the year - Brian Campbell
The award Ceremony takes place at the Glen Pavilion, Dunfermline from 7pm on Wednesday 18 February 2009.
Tickets for the event cost £5, please advise if you wish to attend, monies should be paid direct to the Club and tickets will be ordered for you.

Sunday Session
==============
After a successful session last Sunday it has been decided to have both squads using the pool at the same time from 6.30pm - 8pm giving all players a 1.5hr session.
Our younger players may find the extra 30 minutes difficult, the coaching team will watch these players, if they are tired they can stop early or take a rest, please let them know. Whilst we appreciate the earlier start time does not help those who have to travel some distance it does mean an earlier finish for all especially the youngest players.
This will be effective immediately.

Water Polo Balls
================
The Club were made aware by Fife Council of excess funds which were being made available to purchase equipment. We have been successful in our request for eight new men's Mikasa water polo balls at a value of £200. They will be left at Cowdenbeath.

Sportsmatch Application
=======================
The Club has submitted an application for a Sportsmatch matching grant to assist with the costs of our Junior teams competing in the ASA Cup competitions this season. A decision on our application is expected late February at which time further information can be provided.

Secretary
=========
Members are reminded that the position of Secretary remains vacant although I have retained the official position until such time as a replacement can be found as the Club must operate with a named Secretary. A volunteer to share the load is therefore sought. In itself the position need not be an onerous one - it becomes more difficult when combined with other responsibilities (i.e. coaching). Support is available from ex secretaries.
If interested please discuss with me.

10 Jan 09

From Club Coach

To: Club Members,

First session at Kirkcaldy is this evening (Sat 10th) 5.30pm - 7pm and the first session at Cowdenbeath is tomorrow evening (11 Jan) from 7pm.

Following the change of time at Rosyth the revised session times and squad lists are attached.

Please note the following:

1) The additional 30 minutes at Rosyth is open to all members attending.
2) Junior squad members are not expected to attend on a Sunday evening although they may do so to assist with the development of the younger players and practice basic skills.
3) The Development squad attends the first hour on a Sunday evening and the Academy squad attends the second hour.

A rota for the Coaches has also been issued to ensure that poolside coaches are available, the use of current players has been minimised to ensure that their fitness does not suffer.

No further UKCC Level 1 course is planned this year as a minimum of eight members is required, should eight members / parents wish to sit the course this could be reconsidered, anyone interested in helping on the poolside should contact me (minimum age is 16).

10 Jan 09

Valuing Your Volunteers Workshops

Dates have been issued for several Team Manager courses this year. A "Valuing Your Sports Volunteers" workshop is being held for Water Polo on Saturday January 24th from 10:00 am till 1:00 pm at Stirling . This workshop is aimed at Committee Members, Volunteer Coordinators and those who assist in recruitment of volunteers. It will help clubs to recruit more volunteers, motivate, retain, reward and manage them even more effectively. This should be a very valuable workshop for all committee members of clubs and others. It should provide clubs with ideas on how to increase the number of volunteers involved in Water Polo. More people are badly needed to help share the load. See flyer for course dates. Click here for Volunteer Workshop application form.

The Club has submitted an application to 'Awards for all' to provide floating goals and other equipment to be used initially at Kirkcaldy then relocated to Carnegie Centre when it re-opens.
The result of our application is expected within the next two months.

CALEDONIA SESSION
=================
Our request for an additional 30 minutes on a Monday evening has been successful, the session will therefore commence at 7.30pm finishing at 8.50pm. This will allow for both a more meaningful session (open to all members) and allow matches to be played at this time. This is expected to commence from Monday 12 January 2009.

Message From Treasurer

Dear All,

Happy New Year - hope everyone had a good time over the holiday period. For all of the players receiving this message it will soon be time to return to training to see if you can make 2009 another successful year for Dunfermline Waterpolo Club. For me it’s time to remind you that the 2009 Membership fee of £25 is now due and that the 2009 monthly Standing Order charge is £18 per member (capped at a maximum monthly figure of £45 where there are three or more playing members from one family at the club). I would therefore ask that you arrange to alter your current Standing Order to the new amount with immediate effect and that the Annual Membership Fee is either paid directly to the Club via the Bank details you already have or by cash/cheque to Brian or Iain at poolside (they in turn will pass it on to myself). If you have viewed the information section of the Club website you will see that we are also affording members the facility to spread the annual membership charge over the course of the year by adding £2 per month to the regular payment.

I look forward to your assistance in making the necessary adjustments to the payments as soon as possible and thank you for your continued support of the club.

Regards,

Roddy MacKay
