Match Report – U/19 Girls Scottish League– Kirkintilloch & Kilsyth v DWPC (M’Hill)
Wed 27th March 2024 – Strathclyde University – Glasgow
Despite working very hard and competing positively throughout the game, our depleted and inexperienced U/19 girls team lost their 3rd away game of the season last night, 20-9 to Kirkintilloch & Kilsyth.
The first 2 periods started with Zara in goal and utilising a hybrid drop/press defence to try and negate their physically faster and stronger players we made many successful saves/blocks/steals and interceptions, however despite creating several chances we found it difficult to pose a consistent attacking threat under pressure resulting in missed shots and possession turnovers.
Per 1 – 6- 2, Per 2 – 4 - 2 – Half time score: KK – 10 - DWPC – 4
Eve was introduced into the goal at the start of the 3rd period allowing Zara to play outfield. This added more experience, attacking threat and defensive stability. Eve also had some excellent saves which resulted in a 3-4 period scoreline and a 14 - 7 deficit at the three quarter stage. Despite losing the last period 2-6 it was encouraging as we introduced our younger less experienced players that we still maintained a high and determined work rate and indeed made several chances that we unfortunately missed.
Final Score:– KK – 20 - DWPC 9
Positives of the Performance:
- We competed very well against an older, bigger, faster and more experienced opposition. We swam hard to cover their counter attacks on many occasions.
- We offered much less inside water to their drivers than last game.
- We created several good chances.
- All players enjoyed some water time.
- Our organised defensive shape was good. We saved 5 from the 6 man-ups conceded
Areas to work on:
- Our man-up success was 0 from 3. Try to pass the ball quickly to move the defence and create a scoring opportunity rather than holding onto the ball and then shooting when the defence is set.
- Try to offer more offensive drives from the perimeter.
- Adjust body position quickly when preparing to shoot. Take responsibility to move forward to the goal if you are unmarked.
- Try to mark the ball carrier without fouling for longer.

U17 Boys in SNL action on 27 Mar
Boys U17 SNL
Warrender 8-15 Menzieshill / DWPC
A youthful team travelled to Edinburgh with only one 2008 in the squad. This didn't stop them from taking control of the game right from the off, with an excellent defensive effort and measured attacks. The boys took their chances well and raced into a 5-1 first qtr lead.
In the second qtr Warrender stepped up their game but the boys kept their discipline and managed to convert two man-up opportunities, half time came with a 7-4 lead.
Recognising Warrenders fight back the boys came out fighting in the 3rd quarter and managed to keep a clean sheet whilst coming up with four counter attack goals, to take an 11-4 lead into the final quarter.
A change in goalies and some positional changes saw a fast and entertaining finish to the game and the end of the U17 SNL season. Taking the win home 15-8.

U17 Boys in SNL action Portobello v MHW on 21 Mar
A much depleted U17 Boys Squad travelled to Portobello looking to avenge the 11-15 home defeat in January.
The boys started the game strongly with Frank and Daniel taking them into an early lead. A physical and tactical first quarter finished with a 2-1 lead despite four early exclusions.
The second period continued in the same vein, the boys just lacking a little composure in failing to convert 3 man-ups. Excellent defensive work and hard graft kept the boys going. A solitary goal from James saw the half end 3-3.
The game moved away from the boys a little in the 3rd period, due to a couple of unlucky decisions and fatigue kicking in, Portobello opened up a 5-7 lead.
The 4th period saw a determined and measured performance as Portobello constantly battling to hold onto their lead. Some excellent saves by Alastair and a single goal from Daniel took the game to an exciting finish, but unfortunately couldn't get the extra goal to bring them level, finishing 7-6 to Portobello.
Following on from Tuesdays victory against Warrender the boys have a lot to be proud of in their efforts this week, the young team showing continual improvement and fight for each other.

Match Report –U19 Girls SNL – DWPC v Warrender– 19/03/23
Well done to the combined Menzieshill/DWPC - U/19 Girls team who continued their 100% current home league record with a comfortable 31-10 win against Warrender BC.
We had 13 players on poolside and all girls enjoyed water time and as with last week’s game v KK, being able to rotate 12 outfield players proved positive in the 2nd half when Warrender were depleted through 2 of their stronger players being excluded on 3 major fouls. It was also very positive that our less experienced GK Eve was able to play all 4 periods in goal which included an excellent penalty save in per 4.
We started the game very brightly racing in to a 4-0 lead, however our press defence then became a little lax allowing the opposition free shooting opportunities and inside water on drives which resulted in 2 exclusions, 2 penalties and 4 goals conceded for an 8-4 1st period scoreline. The 2nd period also started well with 3 goals but again Warrender fought back with 4 goals for a successive 8-4 period scoreline and a half time score of 16-8. Our press defence was much better in per 3 allowing us to force 30 second possession clock turnovers and gain ball steals and interceptions enabling us to counter-attack and score 7 without reply. This continued in per 4 with an 8-2 period score and a final result of 31-10.

Strengths of Performance |
Areas to work on: |
||||
· 31 goals scored across 8 different team players. · Strong Press defence at times · When we made a good pass to the CF we mostly scored or gained exclusion · Our man down success was 100% · Our man – up success was 80% |
· Defending 1v1 off the ball drives. Do not give up inside water. · 1 v 1 marking of player who has the ball. Position body horizontally to prevent them spinning around you. If they do get in front, swim alongside and do not foul from behind. · Better shot selection. At times we shot and scored against a weaker GK but should have passed across goal. At times we passed to a player being marked but should have taken the responsibility to shoot ourselves. |
